The concept of a census is as old as history itself. All of the great civilizations such as the Chinese, Egyptians, and Romans used some form of census as a means of determining tribute or a tax on their subjects.
It is a constitutional mandate that is found in Article 1 section 2 of the United States Constitution. Each state will have one congressional seat for every 30, 000 people, but no less that one seat per state. The Bureau of the Census is attached to The US Department Commerce. A Department Secretary or Cabinet Secretary is part of the Executive Branch
appointed by the President, acting as a liaison between The Executive Branch and the Department.
For genealogists the census is a primary means of establishing age, marital status, parentage, occupation, ethnicity, year of immigration, naturalization, and place of origin. All important factors and often a rallying point when little or no statistics are available for an ancestor. If your ancestor has become a Naturalized American, those documents will often contain
the name of the vessel, date, and port of entry to the United States. The ship manifest lists may then be searched for additional information as to the family of the immigrant in the country of origin.
Online search engines such as Ancestry are robust devices that are available for building a family history, but they can be expensive and sometimes a deterrent to a researcher on a tight budget. The potential researcher should aware that documents pertaining to the Federal Government such as the census (1790 through 1930), naturalization papers, vessel lists,
and more are available for free through The National Archives of the United States.
