An Evening Reverie   August 30,  1917    (Vacation Home)

Today the sun shone in glory

The birds sang gay in yon tree

Life’s course ran as smooth as a story

And all went well with me

Now the evening shadows have fallen

Night has settled o’er the lea

And bright the moon is beaming

On a scene as fair as can be

The evening’s mild and balmy

The crickets chant in glee

The heart beats slow and calmly

And the mind from care is free

Dear God in the sunlight golden

On the twilight’s mystery

May there e’er in our hearts be woven

A hymn of praise to Thee

Dear God when the evening shadows

Descend o’er life’s turbulent sea

As I near the end and beginning

Oh ever abide with me
