Idyll       Winter January/February 1916

When at twilight you are watching

Sweet glow across the lea.

When the evening bells are ringing

And the robins in the tree.

Set the summer dusk a tingling

With their vesper melody.

When the drowsy breeze seems bringing

Scenes of long ago to thee.

When thoughts of old keep springing

Through your crowded memory.

May the strands of friendship clinging

Like the ivy to the tree.

Bring to your heart each evening

A kindly thought of me.

[notation 1915]

Though miles stretch between us and high mountains

Shut from our view the friends we would like to see.

Still in our hearts will linger always

Kindly regards and happy memories.
